The Tenzing Hillary Trail – Umakunda – Dudhkunda – Tate; in the Upper Ramechhap and Everest region is an extraordinary trek that offers trekkers a rare opportunity to enter into the Everest region experiencing the off-the beaten trails and also following the foot-prints of Late Tenzing N. Sherpa and Edmund Hilary, in some sections of the trail that remained neglected for about 70 years.
The trail combines awe-inspiring natural beauty with rich cultural diversity, offering a profound insight into Sherpa culture and their deep-rooted relationship with the Himalayas. The trek unfolds amidst towering peaks, including Mount Everest, the world’s highest summit. Glacial valleys, pristine lakes, and dense forests of rhododendron and pine create a dramatic landscape that changes with every turn. The Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves a diverse array of wildlife, from endangered species like the snow leopard to colorful Himalayan birds. The Numbur Himal and Mahalangur Himalayan ranges near Dudhkunda epitomize natural splendor. Towering peaks draped in pristine snow reflect cultural and ecological significance, offering sanctuaries for diverse flora and fauna. These majestic mountains, revered by locals and adventurers alike, form a breathtaking backdrop of spiritual and environmental richness in Nepal’s Himalayas.
The Upper Ramechhap and Everest region are a tapestry of cultures, with the Sherpa people at its heart. Their Tibetan heritage is evident in their unique customs, traditional attire, and Buddhist monasteries adorned with prayer flags. Other ethnic groups like Rai, Tamang, and Gurung also contribute to the cultural mosaic, each adding their own rituals and practices.
The Tenzing Hillary Trek offers not only a trekking adventure through stunning landscapes but also a cultural immersion into the Sherpa way of life and their profound bond with the Himalayas. It is a journey that celebrates natural beauty, cultural diversity, and the enduring spirit of the Sherpa people, making it an unforgettable experience for those seeking both adventure and cultural enlightenment in the Everest region.
Following the ancient salt-trade route to Tibet, the new trail traverses through a series of sacred Himalayan lakes such as Dudhkunda and a number of Yak and Chauri filled colorful alpine pasturelands on the lap of Likhuchuli and Numburchuli. The new trail will also serve as a window to briefly observe the still pristine valley of Likhu River and can be combined with the round-the year trek to Pikey, Junbesi and Tapting from Dudhkunda – Sahastradhara areas.
